Best Cover Band San Francisco 2007 - Zoo Station

Readers' Choice: Smash-Up Derby
Dublin may be home to U2, but we've got the next best thing: Zoo Station. Composed of four U2 lookalikes, this tribute band almost perfectly mimics the hard-rockin', ethereal noise of the Irish supergroup itself. On the dinky stages of San Francisco's Guinness-soaked pubs, Zoo Station manages to rival U2's live-concert charisma. Singer Bonalmost easily hits the legendary high notes of U2's The Joshua Tree days. By his side at stage right stands the stoic Sledge, who works the ax about as well as Edge himself. He sends layers of effects, echoes, and distortion soaring to the 10-foot ceiling and will shiver the spine of any U2 fan. Meanwhile, bassist Adamesque double-tasks on backup vocals and drummer Barely Larry whacks away like the muscle-armed man of the real band. Yeah: It's not really U2, but where else these days can you hear each of their songs live, from A to Z, for a $15 cover?

Zoo Station makes attending actual u2 concerts seem like a rediculous amount of work and money. Sure, fans know that there's nothing like the real thing. Then again, when you factor in the convenience, price of a cover, and the great people involved, in many ways a Zoo Station show is even better than the real thing.

I started seeing Zoo in August 2002, seven months after they started, and have continued to see them roughly twice a month ever since. One hundred and eighteen (yes, 118) shows later, I have to say I'm surprised it took so long for SF Weekly to grant them this honor. I'm just down the line from your love...Zoo Station.... Yours U2ly, BRON-O

ZOO STATION is the best Tribute I have seen since Super Diamond! These guys are not to be missed. That they are up for up for Best of the Bay is no surprise at all. Don't miss this show!

Keep rocking guys!

What is the difference between "Best of" and "Readers Choice"? Dont the readers choose what they like best or do staff votes supercede readers votes? Maybe it needs to be re-named "Editors Choice Awards".

Just wondering if you have seen Smash-Up Derby, because they are truly an "original" cover band. Go see Smash-Up Derby before you vote next year. Because if you like U2, you will love S.U.D.'s "Girls just want to have Bloody Sunday" - U2 vs. Cyndi Lauper - Smash-Up Derby style. The BEST band in SF.
