Always wanted to try rock climbing but feared grave injury? Or are you a seasoned pro stuck in the city visiting your relatives when all you really want to be doing is perfecting your climbing and belaying skills? Look no further than Mission Cliffs, a local climbing community fixture. For the novice, Mission Cliffs offers introductory belaying classes, where you'll learn all you need to know to start trying the beginner routes already laid out for you on the gym's handmade climbing walls. For those with the basics under their belts, these routes offer a decent range of difficulty, all easy to follow or to modify for your own tastes. What's more, the staff changes them every couple of weeks, so there's always something new to try. Who knows, maybe this'll be your first step toward taking on the bigger cliffs Bay Area nature has to offer. But feel free to save that challenge for your next trip. A day pass costs $10-18, while a one-month pass costs $90. If you're serious, monthly memberships (no contract required!) run $61 a month for adults, plus a $100 initiation fee.
