TIX Bay Area
Many people don't go to the theater because they think it's too expensive. But a visit to TIX Bay Area will prove them wrong. The TIX booth on Union Square is the place to go to get seats for a song. Run by Theatre Bay Area (TBA), the local performing arts umbrella organization, both the booth and TBA's Web site sell half-price tickets on the day of the performance or in advance to a wide array of shows in and around San Francisco. Getting seats can be a bit of a crapshoot as some tickets are available only at the booth, and others only online. Plus, availability changes from day to day. Still, the range is impressive. A cursory search on TBA's site at the time of writing revealed seats at Berkeley Rep for $16.50 (instead of $33) and Best of Broadway shows for $30 and upward. Meanwhile, TBA members can get $1,500 in free tickets a year in exchange for $65 in joining fees, guaranteeing that you'll be singing and dancing your way to the bank.
