Cupcakes have gotten all grown-up on us in the 21st century. Kara's Cupcakes, which sources all of its ingredients (most of which are organic) locally, are quite beautiful, elegant, and affordable at $3 each. Such exciting combinations as vanilla or chocolate cake with a coconut cream cheese frosting, chocolate cupcake with espresso buttercream (aka the Java), and carrot or banana cakes with cream cheese frosting are displayed like jewels in modernistic cases. For another quarter, you can go baroque and get a decadent filled cupcake: a vanilla cake with passionfruit filling and iced with vanilla buttercream, or a banana cupcake with caramel filling and cream cheese frosting. But our absolute favorite is Kara's Fleur de Sel: a chocolate cake with caramel filling and silky chocolate ganache icing, sprinkled with the killer touch of crunchy fleur de sel crystals.
