Mission Pie
Finding a good slab of pie in this town has been problematic at least since Bepple's closed its doors several years ago, but the world changed for the better in January 2007 when Mission Pie opened for business. Here, marvelously buttery crusts filled with apples and pumpkin and sweet potato appear fresh from the oven and ready for the eating, gladdening hearts and pleasing stomachs as only America's greatest gift to the culinary arts can do. The apple variety is lush and sweet and touched with cinnamon; the walnut is all crunchy texture on top, syrup-rich creaminess beneath; the zest-ribboned Shaker lemon (our favorite) is zap and zing and succulence in one tidy package. The pies are available whole, by the slice, or in miniature sizes, and Mystipies (South African-style savory pies made locally) are sold here as well. Mission Pie is closely affiliated with the nonprofit Pie Ranch down the coast, where urban youth learn about organic and sustainable farming and in the process help raise much of the wheat, eggs, pumpkins, and berries that go into these delicious, life-affirming pastries.
