Best Steep Hill Bike Ride

Broderick Street

You think you're a champion because you can ride your bike up California Street? Think you're king of the mountains because you can creep your way up 17th Street from the Castro? Think you know hills? Well, we'll give you some hills! Dalewood as it circles Mount Davidson hits 25 percent for a quarter mile. Duncan hits 28 percent between Diamond and Douglass. The final southern block of Stanyan hits 33 percent — double the grade of 17th Street. But for the steepest slope in town, try Broderick as it struggles out of the Marina. For the last block, it's sidewalk only — no street here. Drop into your granny gears, clip into your pedals, and don't lean back, because as it crests to the summit at Broadway, Broderick reaches an ungodly, devastating, fearsomely steep 38 percent. Best of luck, and may the road rise to meet you. In this city, you know it will.
