Best Artmaking Event San Francisco 2009 - Monster Drawing Rally

The Monster Drawing Rally is an annual benefit for Southern Exposure, a nonprofit art gallery, and it consists of audiences watching artists make art, live. Four hour-long sessions find four groups of artists seated at tables arranged in a ring. You walk around them, voyeuristically witnessing a line turn into a tree turn into an underwater forest. When the hour is up, the results go on the wall, and you can attempt to buy them; everything starts at $60, but collectors bid their favorites up pretty high. The next group of artists then gathers art supplies and starts in on a new batch. The artists are usually great, the venue is the snazzy Verdi Club, beer and wine flow, DJs play music at a level that allows people to talk to their friends, and last year, Southern Exposure hired one of El Tonayense's taco trucks to park outside. Buy, eat, drink, people-watch, learn: The Monster Drawing Rally is one of our favorite things to do all year.

The First Church of the Last Laugh celebrates every April Fools' Day with the St. Stupid's Day Parade, in which people dress up in silly costumes and, well, louis vuittonact stupid. But it's all in the name of good fun.
