Gay Shame
Leave it to San Francisco to have so much gay pride that people start feeling guilty about it. Gay Shame — a "celebration of resistance" that meets at 5:30 p.m. every Saturday at Modern Times Bookstore — isn't for casual self-loathers. If you're gay but only mildly embarrassed by that fellow homosexual decked out in Dolce & Gabbana at the gym, then you're probably not intense enough for this crew. Gay Shame exists to call attention to the whole notion of "gay culture" as it's popularly conceived: predominantly white, male, upper-middle-class, cartoonishly musclebound, and rabidly consumerist. Assimilation means annihilation; everyone has been commodified; the Left isn't liberal enough — you know the drill. Yes, Gay Shame may be doomed to fight against the inevitable mainstreaming of gay identity. But the group is a welcome tonic to the gym-bunny "inclusiveness" celebrated at Gay Pride — and you gotta love that its individual members identify themselves only as "Mary" to the press.
