Best New MuseumCalifornia Academy of Sciences
There are so many awesome things about the Cal Academy of Sciences. The jaw-dropping building, with its grassy hillocks on the roof. The multistory rainforest display, which allows you to stroll from roots to treetop. The African penguins, fed twice a day to the delight of squealing tots. The all-digital planetarium, with a 75-foot projection screen that makes you feel like you're flying. But there is one not-so-good thing: the $24.95 adult general admission. Thankfully, the academy has decided to be generous with the free days. Not only is every third Wednesday free, but San Franciscans also get six free days every year based on their ZIP codes — so, for example, if you live in 94116, your free days are May 8, 9, and 10, and September 11, 12, and 13. Check the Web site for details, and say hi to the penguins and the albino alligator.
