For a food blog, getting the balance of text and visuals right is critical. Writers are not necessarily photographers are not necessarily information gatherers. Rather than sticking to tasting notes and brewmaster interview, Friedman honors San Francisco's beer culture in all its forms, with photo essays on restaurants, brewery tours, and food and beer pairing experiments. He writes about timely subjects, such as the time he toured Traci Des Jardins' beer-focused Public House within days of its opening, and conveys as much detail as he can through images. Beer doesn't seem like the most photogenic subject — how many times can you take a pretty picture of a pint? — but the photos on Beer & Nosh remind us that a good eye makes any subject beautiful.
