Museum of the African Diaspora
On a recent visit to the Richard Mayhew exhibit at the Museum of the African Diaspora, we were struck by one thing: There is nowhere else like this. Its mission and reason for being are so rare, and the execution so flawless, that the 2005 addition to the downtown museum district has become a flaming jewel in the area's already-crowded art crown. The choice location, the gorgeous windows, the excellent curation, the interactive exhibits — the museum's attributes are many. (The adjacent luxury hotel bar does not hurt.) What might surprise first-time visitors, however, is the pervasive sense of joy and fun permeating the place. While telling terrible histories and refusing to sugarcoat political realities, the MoAD truly manages to be a sweet spot for kids. And although it just celebrated its five-year anniversary, it remains a unique yet underrated experience for serious art lovers.
