Rotary Meadow

This is a garden of native plants in a clearing within a eucalyptus grove atop the Mount Sutro Open Space Reserve on the UCSF campus. It's so completely circled by trees that it's possible to imagine you're in a vast wilderness. Several miles of newly groomed forest trails surround the meadow, where there's a granite slab bench that's great for picnics. The meadow was a mere bare spot amid 63 acres of weedy eucalyptus until the San Francisco Rotary Club donated $100,000, planted 1,500 shrubs, installed sprinklers, and dumped pea gravel to keep the dust down.
