Love Art Laboratory

Legendary porn star and performance artist Annie Sprinkle and her life partner, artist and art professor Elizabeth Stephens, have made marriage into a continuous work of art. For the past six years, they have renewed their vows with elaborate themed ceremonies at locations across the world. In 2009 during the Venice Biennale, they staged an ecosexual wedding where they symbolically married the sea. Among the blue-clad collaborators at the ceremony were a Fluxus artist modeling underwear and a prostitutes' rights activist who read a love poem by a famous courtesan. But the couple's celebrations aren't only of the good times — when Sprinkle was diagnosed with cancer in 2005, she and Stephens brought their costumes and rituals into doctors' offices and chemotherapy sessions, transforming a painful ordeal into a ongoing celebration of life.
