Best Webzine San Francisco 2011 - The Bold Italic
If print is endangered, the people who created the Bold Italic a year and a half ago were thoughtful enough to name their webzine in tribute to it. That's far from their only thoughtfulness, of course: The whole spirit of the enterprise is bite-sized immersion journalism by people committed to indulging their longstanding fascinations — rescue dogs and running clubs, Skee-Ball bars and home brewing — and not at all afraid to geek out while doing so. Their inquiries offer an inexhaustible stream of local curiosities from a wide swath of local writers, the design aesthetic kicks ass, and someone in the office has a major jones for section-title puns. ("Rod Steward" for an article about fly fishing? Sure, what the hell.) What's not to love?
