SFPD's Tenderloin Station
301 Eddy St.
San Francisco, CA 94102

The San Francisco Police Department's most colorful posting is also the city's smallest. These officers work some of San Francisco's grittiest streets; for their trouble, their station is also the city's newest, built in 2000 to meet the outsize law enforcement needs of the neighborhood. (Before that, it had been a satellite office in the bowels of the Hibernia Bank building.) Dealing with crime here means picking and choosing, and keeping civilians safe doesn't always mean hauling every wrongdoer off to jail. Contrary to what you may see on a midnight walk down Ellis, the Tenderloin is a place for families and children, as well as people struggling with abuse, poverty, and homelessness. Keeping it livable is no small task, and someone's doing it right now.
