Any Game of Thrones fans will tell you the music of the HBO series arguably plays as big of a role as Jon Snow himself. And this Saturday, scores of GoT’s biggest devotees will have the chance to immerse themselves in a world as close to Westeros as possible, courtesy of the show’s Emmy-nominated composer, Ramin Djawadi.
When Game of Thrones Live Concert Experience hits San Jose’s SAP Center Saturday night, audience members will be transported to the fictional world of George R.R. Martin via a full orchestra and choir performing music from all seven seasons of the iconic, award-winning series. Djawadi has been at the helm of GoT’s music production since the very beginning, crafting compelling, often-thunderous, sometimes-tender instrumental arrangements to accompany the show’s sweeping action and more reflective moments. Occasional vocal performances have made it on-screen and into the series’ soundtracks as well, most of which were conducted in Prague with The Czech Film Orchestra and Choir.
Over the course of the show’s seven seasons, Djawadi’s has managed to match the emotional weight of the onscreen visuals, ranging from intimacy to all-out blood baths. The composer has said his strategy for acoustically nailing the show’s complexities has been to sit down with co-creators David Benioff and Dan Weiss at the start of each season and hone in on the nuances that call for accompanying musical depth. Incorporating distinctive sounds and instruments like didgeridoos are for the wildlings and the Armenian duduk flute for the Dothrakis, Djawadi has skillfully crafted a universal language of sound spoken only by fluent GoT fans.
Saturday’s show at SAP Center is one of 23 stops on Djawadi’s tour, which features theatrical visuals and goosebump-inducing passion from orchestra members and vocalists. If this year’s tour is anything like last year’s inaugural run, fans will have the chance to relive pivotal scenes from the show projected on towering screens while taking in the onstage talent playing through the emotional turbulence of GoTs highest and lowest moments. Prepare yourself for that Red Wedding tribute.
