We're smack in the midst of the most gorgeous weather San Francisco has seen all year and Saturday's 20th Street Block Party, might be the coolest, most interactive place to be out in the sunshine this weekend.
A full slate of the area's food options, presented by Ne Timeas Restaurant Group (flour + water, Central Kitchen), and music curated by Noise Pop highlight a block party celebration of a particularly multi-faceted part of the Mission. Just about every restaurant in the vicinity will have special offerings in celebration of the budding area's vibrant food and drink culture.
20th Street Block Party is a free event to the public (VIP package also available) from 12-6 p.m. this Saturday, Sept. 12 and we've put together a few picks and highlights of some of the delicious, musical and artistic things that'll be at your disposal on Saturday.
[jump] The Food
The American Grilled Cheese Kitchen – 2400 Harrison Street
They'll be offering half sandwiches and a beer for $10. I've got my sights set on the bacon grilled cheese with crispy maple brussels sprouts, because duh.
Salumeria – 3000 20th Street
I've been crazy intrigued by this place after my first visit. House-cured meats galore and badass sandwiches. For the block party, they'll have
housemade sausages and beer in the entryway. It's a fine high-end deli, who always has super edgy rotating indie playlists. And don't sleep on their housemade pasta salad, it was light and flavorful, relying on the delicate juxtaposition of olive oil and parmigiano cheese.
Rhea's Deli – 2200 Bryant Street
They're Korean steak sandwich is can't-miss fare, and you get a free soft drink with your order during the block party.
Ne Timeas Culinary Workshop Tent – right outside of flour + water at 20th between Harrison and Alabama streets.
This is the most engaging culinary event of the block party. Flour + Water Executive chef Thomas McNaughton will emcee a slew of cooking workshops including making paella with Aatxe's Ryan Pollnow, a Hands-On Peach Cobbler workshop with Anna Derivi-Castellanos and Lenore Estrada of Three Babes Pie Shop, and McNaughton himself will host a pasta-making workshop. Check out the full slate and schedule here.
El Metate – 2406 Bryant St
Because if you swing by and mention the block party, there's a free agua fresca waiting for you! Gonna be necessary if this heat wave holds up…
The Music & Art
A community mural project is going down from 12-4 p.m. at the Artshop Workshop tent, where anyone can contribute to its creation. There's also an arts and crafts station by Workshop SF, an interactive installation from SOEX and Mutiny Radio will be conducting live broadcasts. Check out the full arts schedule here.
Thao & the Get Down Stay Down – 5 p.m., Main Stage
The SF-based folk pop singer and her band are headlining the event.
No Vacation – 1:30 pm Bandwagon Stage
I fell madly in love with the bedroom pop from this USF band.
Dominant Legs – 4:20 pm Bandwagon Stage
Go ahead and file Dominant Legs in the “SF Bands We Miss” Dept. This set is an unexpected treat.
