Baby Goats! Baby Goats! CUESA Has All the Baby Goats!

OMG OMG they're coming (CUESA)

Did you fail to get tickets to see Radiohead, Lady Gaga, and Kendrick Lamar at that little music festival down in Indio? That’s too bad, but the Center for Urban Education about Sustainable Agriculture (CUESA) has a ready substitute.

It’s the Ninth Annual Goat Festival, aka Goatchella (Saturday, April 15, 9 a.m. – 2 p.m., at the Ferry Building), which is guaranteed to satisfy all your Capra aegagrus hircus-petting needs. In addition to a bunch of barnyard animals running adorably amok in a confined pen with all the cutes noises they make, there’s a bunch of ranchers and artisanal food makers present to inform you about all the wonderful aspects of animal husbandry that we urbanites seldom know.

Coachella is really cool and all, but at Goatchella, the participants’ pupils are horizontal — and it’s not ’cause they took too much molly.

Starting at 9 a.m., there’s Goaty Arts & Crafts for the kids, at which you may make your own horns. But that’s only a prologue to the actual goat-petting (10 a.m. – 1 p.m.) courtesy of Marin’s Animal Welfare-approved dairy, Toluma Farms and Tomales Farmstead Creamery. (Note: You need a ticket for this part, because mobs of excitable San Franciscans tend to stress out the baby goats.)

Afterwards, there’s a goat-cheese cooking demo with Sophina Uong of Mestiza Taqueria, plus more goat milk cheese plates courtesy of the California Artisan Cheese Guild. (They’re on a first-come, first-served basis, but you can preorder here.) There’s also a farmers market scavenger hunt, an animal welfare talk, and plenty of goat-tastic merch.

And, of course, there’s plenty of food. (It’s the Ferry Building, after all.)
