Bites from Sunday's SF Food Wars' Great Salsa ChampionChip

The Soy Kitchen's "Summer Lovin' Salsa" won People's Choice Honorable Mention.

SF Food Wars hosted its eighth cooking competition, the Great Salsa ChampionChip, last Sunday in front of a crowd of 350 at Ferry Plaza. As the lucky resident guest judge, we always have fun meeting new people and checking out their ingenuity. This time, we particularly appreciated participating in a new, gorgeous venue with the city skyline as a backdrop.

Our fellow guest judges, Joe Schirmer of Dirty Girl Produce and Sarah Henkin of CUESA, smartly arranged the 20 entries in order of perceived hotness, a difficult task considering the majority of contestants had described their offerings as “spicy.” Still, we somehow knew to put “Ass Volcano” from a team called A Fire Inside, a concoction of caramelized pineapple, vanilla bean, and ghost chile (supposedly the hottest on the Scoville scale), dead last in the tasting order.

The next SF Food Wars is in November. Return of the Mac brings the competition back full circle to macaroni and cheese, theme of the very first battle in August 2009. We've got our giant box of Lactaid at the ready.
