Veronica Salazar is projecting a spring or summer opening for the brick-and-mortar version of El Huarache Loco, her thriving street-food business that's been a fixture at the Alemany market. Construction begins next week on the building, to be located at the Marin Country Mart as part of the redevelopment of the Larkspur Landing space. Salazar has already set up a booth at that site's farmers' market.
When complete, the restaurant will feature a casual environment with sit-down and outdoor seating (hopefully with a live fire to spit-roast lamb and goat), homemade furniture, and real cazuelas from Mexico. Expect the menu to be an extension and refinement of Salazar's D.F.-style street food. Salazar and her mentors at minority business incubator La Cocina are currently meeting with prospective designers. La Cocina has put a call for donations to help fund businesses like El Huarache Loco, which is expected to generate revenue at an average of $3 for every $1 donated.
The restaurant project means El Huarache Loco will not go forward with previous plans to operate La Cocina's food cart in Dolores Park, though Salazar plans to stay on at Alemany.
