I don’t know when San Francisco became such a pizza town, but it happened. Who knew? There are openings happening all over the city and Eater round-ups are constantly coaching us where to get the best slices and pies. Veterans like Arinell’s New York pizza and Little Star’s Chicago deep dish have long held down their reputations as some of the best pizza places representing their home towns here in the Bay, but I think it’s about time a new East Coast slice gets the credit is deserves.

24th Street is famous for a lot of things, but historically pizza hasn’t been one of them. This year marks five years for a pizza parlor that has changed that reputation for the better. The Pizza Shop on the corner of 24th and Folsom streets is the brainchild of New Jersey native and pizza aficionado Thomas Jividen. He has created one of the closest renditions of an East Coast slice-shop around the city. The quarter-circle glass dome that greets guests after walking in displays about six different types of classic slices from cheese and pepperoni with mushrooms to meat lovers and tomato and garlic. The most alluring quality of these slices are their unmistakable simplicity. The crust is thin and crispy with the ideal tear and chew. The sauce is sweet and tangy, and the cheese is freckled with heavenly little bubbles.

The dark horse of the bunch is the white spinach, covered in spinach, ricotta, mozzarella, garlic, and parmesan cheese. The funky medley of cheese blends magnificently together while the small clumps of fresh spinach add an earthy freshness. Only a classic pizza joint would know that they’re not complete without a special slice that is all their own.

Bottom line, The Pizza Shop is just flat out good. It’s consistent and reliable. It’s quick, easy, and it’s cash only. They will heat up your slice for you and you can eat it at one of their small tables while people-watching tourists and locals cruising down 24th, or take it on the go and gobble it down on your way to Blind Cat for a pint and a game of pool. The point is good pizza is meant to be simple. It doesn’t overthink it or celebrate itself. It just is what it is. Based on their name, I’m guessing The Pizza Shop already knows this.
