Plus the Dunkin Donuts invasion is set to commence, you can reserve a spot at Roka Akor's sushi bar via Instagram, and dining at SFO is going to get fancier still.
[jump] Wes Burger N' More Will Open in March
Mission Local reports that Wes Burger N' More, Wes Rowe's brick-and-mortar successor to his Mojo Bicycle Cafe pop-up will open next month at 2440 Mission, on the same block as Commonwealth and Mission Chinese Food. There will be weekly Tex-Mex specials.
R.I.P. Liverpool Lil's, 1972-2015
After a fire in the apartment above gutted Liverpool Lil's last year, the team vowed to come back. But it's not happening, as Hoodline reports. A GoFundMe campaign, while successful, wasn't enough and the landlord is raising the rent. Now we must pin our collective post-conflagration dive bar resurrection hopes on The Riptide.
#VoteWithYourThroat at The Keystone
I might have suggested a less visceral-sounding rhyme for that hashtag, but The Keystone has three election-year cocktails named for the three people with any conceivable chance of becoming president this November: There's a #TRUMPCARD (Smirnoff, ginger beer, and orange, a #CHILLARYCLINTON (Spirit Works gin, Vya Whisper dry vermouth, and spearmint) and a #FEELTHABERN (Evan Williams 100-proof bourbon, lemon, Vermont maple syrup, and cayenne). I should also note that the #FEELTHABERN is basically the lemonade you drink on the Master Cleanse, with bourbon added, which is pretty rad.
The Grill at the St. Regis Opens Next Week
Chef Frank Desplechin's pop-up (and Ame replacement), The Grill opens next week. It's … uh … expensive. While $46 is not insanely excessive for a whole lobster, a $32 half-chicken, $26 Angus burger, and $46 Colorado lamb chop with chanterelles, sunchokes, and rosemary jus is quite something.
Walnut Creek Gets Dunkin Donuts, Gott's Roadside
A former Taco Bell in Walnut Creek is set to become the Bay Area's first Dunkin' Donuts, and hopefully it heralds many more. Soberly and sensibly, the Business Times looks at the plan in terms of employment: Contra Costa's 12 proposed D.D.'s might create up to 600 job. However: Frozen Caramel Coffee Coolattas! Walnut Creek is also getting a Gott's Roadside, the chain's fifth location. As Inside Scoop notes, with Teleferic and Sauced BBQ, it's suddenly worth the $10.70 round-trip BART fare from 16th Street to the fifth-to-last stop on the Pittsburg/Bay Point line.
New Menu for Spring at Glen Ellen Star
Chef-owner Ari Weiswasser's two dozen laying hens are ready for spring, and so is Glen Ellen Star's new wood-fired oven. The new, egg- and bread-heavy menu includes a levain with caramelized spring onions topped with zataar as well as appetizers like a wood-roasted asparagus with hen egg emulsion, shaved radish and lavash; and entrees such as braised chicken with pozole verde and pickled jalapeños.
Get a Table at Roka Akor Via Instagram
For the month of March, you can get one of five off-the-menu sushi bar reservations at Roka Akor if you ask nicely via Chef Mike Lim's Instagram account. They have to be a week in advance and you have to DM him — but you should probably also stalk him a little and like a bunch of his pics, maybe the one of all the watermelon radish slices.
New Restaurants at SFO Include Another Napa Farms Market
By next year, according to the Business Times, our ever-fancy international airport's International Terminal will get a Samovar Tea and Chai Lounge (located before security), a Mustards (of Napa Valley) and — connected to Mustards — a second location of Napa Farms Market, already the toast of Terminal 2. Never in human history has an airport-related business had more favorable Yelp reviews than Napa Farms Market.
New Mushroom Hikes at ForageSF
It hasn't been especially rainy lately, but the wet winter has created better conditions for mushroom foraging than in years past, so the mycologists at ForageSF are holding weekend hikes along the Marin and Sonoma coasts. One thing they're clear on: It's more for education than for going home with a ton of shrooms.
The Governor of Michigan Knew About Flint's Water in 2014
Of all the damning things that have come to light about Gov. Rick Snyder's handling of the Flint water crisis, this is probably the worst yet: According to the Detroit Free Press, they knew all along. In other news, it's going to be awhile before these people can drink from the tap again.
ZomBees Are Officially National News
And the New York Times has published the grossest photo I've ever seen in that notoriously prudish “family newspaper,” of a maggot bursting out of a parasitized bee.
'The Fruit Salad of Your Life'
Dr. Ben Carson's totally nonsensical remark at the GOP debate last evening has really lit up the internet.
