The city's fleet of coffee kiosks named for vintage Lambretta scooters is about to expand. Expect an early February opening for Grand Prix in Tillman Place (at Grant), just outside Azul. Owner Kirk Harper is a partner (along with Star Stream's John Quintos) in SOMA's Vega and Special Xtra kiosks. And just like the Cento kiosk next to Little Skillet is Quintos' solo project, Grand Prix will be Harper's, though the offerings will be the same (Blue Bottle coffee, Goody Goodie sweets, and the house-special Macau iced coffee). Harper tells SFoodie he expects Grand Prix and Azul to have the same kind of relationship Special Xtra has with Harlot, i.e., daytime subtenant carving out a corner of the façade. But Harper, who goes by the name The Selecter Dj Kirk, is also a DJ and promoter, says he plans to offer Azul some help on the nightclub end of things, too. (His specialty: Mod and vintage soul.) That, plus Grand Prix will have access to Azul's full kitchen, meaning it can eventually do a bit of croissant- and scone-baking on site. Expect café tables in alley-like Tillman Place, eventually ― by summer maybe.
Opening the first week of February:
Grand Prix: 1 Tillman (at Grant). Mon.-Fri. 7:30 a.m.-4 p.m., Sat.-Sun 9 a.m.-3 p.m.
