Oakland's Taco Trucks Have Become Robbery Targets

The Bay Citizen has an alarming piece today about how the taco trucks in Oakland's Fruitvale neighborhoods are trying to figure out how to protect themselves from predation. Cash businesses, the taco trucks have been seen as easy targets for robbers, and most of the robberies go unreported to the police. Just three months ago, the five-year-old son of one lonchero was shot and killed in what may have been retaliation for a thwarted robbery years before.

Now the trucks are organizing to hire security guards — at a cost of $40,000 a month — and install cameras on their trucks. Safety comes at a high price for business owners who only charge $1.25 or so per taco.
