Open/Shut Report: Hello Andytown No. 2, R.I.P. Ruby Skye

Now Open

Anina (482 Hayes St.) Brass Tacks (formerly Marlena’s) took over the adjacent Flipper’s Burgers a little over a year ago, and the space is now a cocktail bar called Anina that’s as brightly painted as a Matisse canvas. 

China Live (644 Broadway). It’s been open for two weeks, as we’ve reported already, but the hyper-ambitious, multi-story, 30,000-square-foot, $20 million China Live has debuted lunch service. The Chronicle spoke with restaurateur George Chen, whose had a difficult past with ambitious projects, and who must have been sweating every high-profile closure of the last 18 months. If China Live thrives, maybe its success can help breathe new life into the Empress of China, sitting idle since 2014?

El Capitan Taqueria (1123 Folsom St.) The corner spot in SoMa that used to be Citizens Band is now a taqueria called El Capitan, and Hoodline reports that Anton’s Pizzza and Deli will fill the adjacent space that was once the location of Pinkie’s Bakery.

Me & Tasty (3970 17th St.) Since Manos Nouveau and Pica Pica both had trouble hanging on at this Castro address — which manages to be behind a gas station and behind the F-Market terminus all at once — Thai-fusion restaurant Me & Tasty is going all-in by opening for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. There are chicken and waffles, so the owners do know how to read a room. Although its opening date got pushed back, it’s fully open now.

Andytown (3629 Taraval St.) The second location of the three-year-old Outer Sunset coffee roastery debuts this Saturday, March 18 with free coffee all day. Hoodline reports that the team behind Andytown will commemorate a neighborhood dog named Doug Doug who likes to chill at the original Lawton Street location by putting his face on a to-go cup.

Dumpling Time (11 Division St.). Next month, around the block from Omakase and Okane, the same restaurant group will open Dumpling Time, with 70 seats and a menu full of Asian-Californian influences. 

Kagawa-Ya Udon Noodle Co. (1455 Market St.). Mid-Market’s getting some udon as of late April. Sean Lim’s alcohol-free Kagawa-Ya Udon Noodle Co. will be found beneath Uber’s headquarters, a sign that the glut of splashy, enormous restaurants that opened and crashed in the neighborhood will be replaced by a bunch of fast-casual places.

Meatball Bar (126 Sutter St.). Into the space formerly occupied by Jewish deli Shorty Goldstein’s is an all-meatball joint with a very logical name. Slated to open in May, Meatball Bar is from the Doppio Zero guys, and Eater reports that it’s neither a sandwich shop nor a proper Italian restaurant, but a place for various types of meatballs from around the world. Is anybody else reminded of the old lady who paid Adam Sandler in meatballs for voice lessons in The Wedding Singer?

New Seasons Market (555 Fulton St.) Hayes Valley’s getting a grocery store! This location of New Seasons Market will be the Oregon chain’s first in S.F., and it’s full-size at 29,000 square feet, too. (Also of note: The long-vacant Delano’s on 23rd and South Van Ness is now a fully functioning Grocery Outlet.)

Far in the Future If at All

Knife (inside the Metreon, St.). A famous Dallas-area steakhouse plans to open a location in the Metreon around the end of 2018, Eater reports. That’s a long time away, but Fogo de Chão might still be sweating this news. Also, I call no fair: The shitty, crime-ridden mall I work above (Westfield Centre) is hemorrhaging eateries and the mall around the block keeps gaining them. 

Some Street Food Nexus in SoMa, Maybe (1001 Harrison St.). You know the cool ruins of that former Car Wash-era car wash across Sixth Street from the End Up? Hoodline caught that plans have been filed for a street food hub that would be like a smaller version of SoMa StrEat Food with room for seven trucks, plus a fully licensed bar of some kind.

Wine Bar project from The Barrel Room (3232 Scott St.) When Bin 38 became Scotland Yard, it was a fine restaurant with something of a schizophrenic feel: The space felt like a wine bar but the menu was perhaps too dudebro. So the owners of The Barrel Room have taken it over and will open a wine-pairing-centric restaurant early this summer.

Shut

The Corner Store (5 Masonic Ave.) The Chronicle reports that after five years, The Corner Store will shut down. The sincere, gingerly worded statement the ownership released cites unspecified economic pressures, which is probably a good way of saying that wages are what did them in without attracting lots of troll-y comments on their FB page.

Ruby Skye and Slide (420 Mason St.). Hoodline reports that San Francisco’s premiere bridge-and-tunnel experience — which is actually two unconnected, adjacent spaces — is going away forever, probably by early May. They’ll reopen later this year as August Hall (a plurality-EDM club) and a sports bar and three-lane bowling alley that could easily have retained the name Slide but will be called The Fifth Arrow. Remember that time three years ago that Ruby Skye dealt with a nasty issue involving raw sewage where the booze is kept? That was gross.
