Open/Shut Report: Hinodeya, Jane the Bakery, Phlox Commons

Plus La Urbana seems to have shut down ... permanently?

JANE Bread (Jane Bakery)

Hinodeya (1737 Buchanan). With an emphasis on dashi-style ramen — made from fish stock in lieu of pork, and uncommon outside Japan — Hinodeya will open on Nov. 23 in Japantown. Hoodline says that after a successful test run at the J-POP Festival this summer, the debut will feature a limited dinner menu plus beer and sake, with a tasting menu sometime down the line.

Phlox Commons (1075 Sutter, inside the Hotel Carlton). The space once occupied by Saha will become Phlox Commons this weekend, according to SF Gate, serving charcuterie, “shareable breads,” and larger plates like pappardelle delicata and steak frites.

JANE the Bakery (1881 Geary). Amanda Michael’s JANE Bakery, which opened on Larkin Street in 2011 and expanded to Fillmore three years later, will take over that abandoned KFC/Taco Bell on Geary Blvd. Hoodline reported months ago the the KFC bucket, which got painted black to mourn the lost franchise, will remain. Let’s hope so!

Tartine Manufactory. Via Eater SF, Eater LA reports that Tartine Manufactory will open a Southern California location next fall in Downtown Los Angeles, and it will be three times the size of the Mission one.

La Urbana (661 Divisadero). This one looks a bit ambiguous, but Inside Scoop reports that what appeared to be a temporary closure at the three-year-old, high-end Western Addition Mexican restaurant appears to have become permanent.

Ozumo (2251 Broadway, Oakland). Citing “escalating occupancy costs, rising costs of labor, and healthcare mandates,” Inside Scoop reports that the nine-year-old Oakland sushi restaurant will close as of Nov. 20, although the S.F. location will remain open.
