The Twilight Zone may be full of ghouls and people who broke their glasses after a nuclear apocalypse, but twilight itself is probably the second-best part of the day after happy hour. Sometimes the two even overlap, as at the Presidio Trust and Off the Grid’s Presidio Twilight, a companion party to the Presidio Picnics, held every summer Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Back for the fifth year running as of May 17, Presidio Twilight takes over the Main Parade Ground every Thursday from 5 to 9 p.m., with free outdoor games, lantern-lit cabanas, and plenty of food. To keep everybody toasty, there are even fire pits, around which you may dig into Johnny Doughnuts’ seasonal pastries, falafel and pita wraps from Casablanca, fried clams from Cousins Maine Lobster, and BBQ meat plates from The Boneyard.
This year, in addition to those returning favorites, you’ll find Asian bao-derived tacos from Wezy, fresh rolls from Jinyao Huang’s Yoshi Sushi & Grill, and ribeye slathered in nacho cheese from I Love Cheesesteak. Since the Presidio isn’t always the easiest place to get to for people without four wheels — and it’s a zero-waste, leave-no-trace kind of party besides — you can ride over from downtown via the PresidiGo shuttle. Or you could hike your way there and reward yourself with a Portuguese sausage from Mixwell.
The Presidio has undergone huge changes since it defended San Francisco from those dastardly confederates, but remember a few years ago when this beautiful stretch of lawn used to be an underused parking lot? Let’s all be thankful that asphalt rode off into the twilight.
