Cronuts — those tasty combinations of croissants and doughnuts — are so 2014. Now, courtesy of Vive La Tarte‘s new stall at the Ferry Building, we have the tacro, a very large, have-a-fork-and-napkins-handy croissant shell bursting with savory fillings.
There are three tacros in all, and they’re big enough to justify the $12 price tag. Choose from chile chicken with avocado, slow-roasted pulled pork and pineapple, or barbecued jackfruit with mango pico de gallo. For salsa, you’ve got two choices: green (avocado with cilantro, lemon, salt and pepper, and jalapeño), or red (chili, lemon, salt and pepper, and cherry tomato).
A more compact version of Vive La Tarte’s three-year-old SoMa location, the Ferry Building spot offers plenty of what fans have come to love, like fruit-stuffed croissants, smashed avocado toast, and a bircher muesli bowl, along with sandwiches on house-made sourdough, Sightglass Coffee espresso drinks, coconut cold-brew coffee, and turmeric lattes. Owners Arnaud Goethals and Julie Vandermeesch started out with that #vanlife, selling tarts from a VW bus in 2011, and now they’ve got what might be the next craze on their hands.
