Punk, country, rockabilly, and heavy metal classics blare from the jukebox of this Castro-adjacent dive that increasingly stands out amidst the shiny new bars and restaurants in its neighborhood. Hopefully the Lucky 13 - with its loooong bar, dark tables, and kitsch-filled recesses - won't succumb to the fancifying trends anytime soon ... although even upscale newcomers can appreciate the Lucky 13's impressively large microbrew selection and popular happy hour. This longtime Bernal Heights neighborhood bar -- previously known as Skip's Tavern (R.I.P.) -- is currently in the middle of the sure-to-be-ongoing process of becoming the Lucky Horseshoe. The interior has been mostly cleared of Skip's riotous beer paraphernalia and candid Polaroid snapshots, and the lighting scheme has been darkened considerably, but the van-worthy front mural is brighter than ever, the resolutely unfancy faux-wood paneling remains, and 49ers memorabilia has begun to reclaim its rightful place on the walls. What about live music, you ask? If we were a Magic 8-Ball, our answer would be: Reply hazy, try again later. More >>

http://www.lukasoakland.com With everything else going on at Luka's -- pool, pinball, DJs, dancing, art openings, 16 beers on tap at the full bar -- it seems astonishing that the happening spot (which took the place of an aging Hofbrau) should also have a happening kitchen, but it does. Serious sandwiches (flank steak, apricot-braised pork, a thick burger) and salads rule at lunch; dinner is even more serious, featuring such dishes as grilled rib-eye, choucroute garnie, braised lamb shank, and cioppino. An array of fresh seafood, including a plateau de fruits de mer and tasty crab fritters, is available at lunch and dinner. Finish with a crème fraîche mousse or a selection of cheeses. More >>
http://www.lushloungesf.com After moving out of its small, den-like location down the block, the Lush Lounge opened an airy new Polk Street home that's both more open and more inviting, with a decorating scheme that feels like they bought an entire Cost Plus World Market outlet and scattered the goods across every surface. Large front windows let in plenty of light (and make for great people-watching opportunities), while an upstairs balcony provides spillover seating when the downstairs gets crowded. Daily happy hour deals (including all day Sunday and Monday) help keep prices down on a respectable variety of beers and liquors. More >>
