http://www.sfblues.net/Saloon.html Revered for its daily live blues performances, the Saloon also has the rugged distinction of having survived the 1906 earthquake and standing as the oldest bar in San Francisco (opened in 1861). With its rough aged-wood interior and hardy clientele, the Saloon definitely stands apart from the shiny new neighbors along this nightlife-rich stretch of North Beach. More >>
http://www.savannajazz.com Savanna stands out in its neighborhood: it's almost as if a North Beach jazz club dropped a spore on Mission Street. Intimate and comfortable, with accents of fake plastic plants, Savanna presents live jazz most nights of the week, along with dinner and drinks at a reasonable price. More >>
Opened the year after the 1906 earthquake, the Savoy Tivoli has seen a lot of changing faces over the past century -- and if you spend enough time in this old bohemian bar, you may well see some changing faces yourself. In the late afternoons and evenings, the Savoy Tivoli is a mellow, airy place in which to sip a cocktail while listening to classic bebop on the stereo and enjoying the artsy retro decor (e.g., colorful glass lanterns, sculptural lamps, jazz collages). As night falls, however, the music switches to contemporary pop as the crowd swells with young partiers looking to quaff pints, shoot pool, or maybe even dance under the disco ball that hangs in the small back room. Of course, the North Beach party crowd probably doesn't appreciate the bar's historical relevance -- but the Savoy Tivoli will likely outlive them anyway. More >>
http://www.sfbadlands.com Out-of-towners coming to the Castro will always need a garish watering hole in which to dance and get trashed. Badlands is that place. The beats are strictly uncomplicated club hits and Top 40, and the diva-heavy videos are always amusing if not predictable. Locals, however, tend to steer clear of the venue because of recent accusations of racial discrimination by some of its former clientele. More >>
http://www.sfmixbar.com Mix is a quintessential gayborhood bar: rainbow flags as far as the eye can see, super-sweet bartenders (some in tight white tanks), many flavors of Absolut, and a dance-friendly jukebox. What Mix has that other gay bars might not is a slammin' back patio, complete with an additional full bar, robust heat lamps, pool table, large-screen TVs, free-condom bin, and margarita machine. Sip on those at 6 a.m. when they open (which they do on a daily basis). Mix also boasts generous happy hours: 3-7 p.m. on weekdays and noon to 10 p.m. on weekends. But you'll pay cash for your drinks - they don't accept cards, but do have an ATM if needed. More >>
http://www.sfjazz.org Scheduled to open in January 2013, the new Hayes Valley home of SFJAZZ is an ambitious building that will house an auditorium, rehearsal spaces, a learning lab, cafe, and more. More >>
http://www.shanghaikellys.com The cooler labeled "spare livers" above the bar is indicative of the workouts livers get here. Russian Hill bros outnumber gals ten-to-one. There's so much male bonding going on that the din drowns out the sportscasters from the three screens set to various sports channels. The kitschy decor (photos of Gilligan and his island hotties, a man mooning sheep in New Zealand, etc.) offers plenty of visual stimuli for those who attempt to try all of the house-made cocktails (many of which are liquor + lemonade). http://www.shebapianolounge.com Don't let the hokey exterior fool you, this place offers a comfortable, even classy setting in the heart of the Fillmore. Perhaps Meatless Mondays will draw you in, as all Ethiopian restaurants seem to have great vegetarian menus. This one costs more, but delivers the goods (they've even made the injera upscale), as does the cocktail list. Half the house cocktails are made with Ethiopian spiced bitters - and even the others are suitably named, such as the Abyssinian Storm (which is essentially a Dark and Stormy, but a really good one) - or you can order Tej, traditional honey wine. Note: This is not for the budget drinker. As for the piano lounge, expect a soloist early in the week, but midweek to weekend nights is when a trio completes the ambiance. More >>
http://www.shinesf.com For those looking for a late-night club without the velvet ropes and exorbitant covers, Shine is your diamond in the city's rough. This little bar/dancefloor is hidden behind an unobtrusive door in a relatively inconspicuous part of SOMA. The DJs spin house and trance as the numerous disco balls dance light all over the dark walls, hardwood floors, and sparse furnishings. The TVs bleed from one animated colorful blur into the next as Mission hipsters sip mostly mixed drinks. Things might be happening here prior to 11 p.m., but it's unlikely - show up after 11:30 p.m. if you want company. More >>
http://www.shotwellsbar.com Established in 1891 - though it's gone through numerous permutations since then - this neighborhood bar offers a relaxing atmosphere to get your beer on. Whether you lean toward imports or craft beers, and whether you prefer draft or bottled beer, you'll find the gamut from cheapo pints of Anchor to break-the-bank numbers from rare, remote breweries. There's also some wine, cider, and soft drinks for the hop haters. Make yourself at home among the friendliest subset of the typical Mission crowd, who will be happy to play you a game of 8-ball on the beater billiard table or change the channel to your favorite sporting or even non-sporting event. http://www.showdownsf.com The venue formerly known as the Matador - and the Arrow Bar before that - has morphed yet again. The Deco-retro wood bar and cool vintage lights are still here, however, with a handful of candlelit tables edging the small dance floor in back. And whatever subtle decor changes may occur, this li'l spot on gritty Sixth Street is always a source of sweet downtown beats, ranging from indie hip-hop, funk, and dubstep to downtempo, house, and more. Keep an ear bent their way if underground sounds are your thing. More >>
http://www.theshowroomsf.com In the mezzanine of this exquisitely detailed old lobby - once a Cadillac dealership, now housing the AMC Van Ness movie theater - hides a music venue. The Showroom offers a full bar, a food menu of tapas and pasta, and weekend performances featuring local cover bands and other pop-rock entertainments. More >>
http://www.silvercloudsrestaurantandkaraokebar.com Silver Clouds has karaoke most nights: When the bar is open Tuesday through Sunday, you can take your turn on the mic from 9:30 pm on. The stage is set up with a disco ball and a wall of Christmas lights, and your performance is broadcast to the entire bar via flat-screen TV. It's also a large sports bar with no shortage of seating, though you can brave the S.F. air on the well-sized smoking patio out back. Standard bar food like burgers or calamari help soak up the strong $6 mixed drinks. Beware: weekends are packed. If you want to sing Neil Diamond's greatest hits uninterrupted, go on a weeknight. The Silver Spur is a bright, occasionally boisterous, and often laid-back local watering hole that's as American as the cowboy boot on its sign. You wouldn't come here to order the complex European cocktail-du-jour that's trendy in SOMA nightclubs. This is a place to grab a Budweiser, catch the Giants game on TV, and forget about that timeclock waiting for you at work tomorrow. More >>
http://www.siploungesf.com Sip specializes in stiff drinks and serves spirits by the bottle. Order a liter and have it delivered to a private table with your choice of nine bottomless mixers including cranberry juice, tonic water, and lemon lime soda (Red Bull is also available for an extra fee). You can also choose from a list of "classic," "refreshing," or "elegant" cocktails or perhaps a glass of wine or beer (bottled only). Sip is only open to the general public Fridays and Saturdays from 9 p.m.-2 a.m., but you're guaranteed a live DJ spinning a mixture of hip-hop and bump-and-grind tunes from an elevated booth. Call ahead to reserve one of the low candlelit tables for up to nine guests or the spacious mezzanine room for larger parties. More >>
