http://www.boomboomblues.com Couches and cocktails complement a blues and funk boogie, which makes shaking it on the checkerboard dance floor an old-fashioned must. Nightly, up-and-coming national acts play sweaty, steamy sets on the venue's small stage - always a rollicking time. Read more about this San Francisco bar or club >>
This underground Japantown dive - meaning you have to follow the street-level signs a floor down - has a reputation as a "hostess" bar, so don't be surprised if all the bartenders are cut from the same cloth and throw back drinks with their customers. Other things to know about Dimples: it has separate karaoke rooms; non-karaoke music is provided via CD jukebox; they give you complimentary peanuts; no one will stop you from smoking (despite signs stating it's not allowed); and all beer comes in bottles (i.e., no taps). http://www.thefillmore.com It's legendary and one of the best venues anywhere: great sightlines, killer sound system, and - most importantly - a continuous parade of top musical talent gracing the stage. Whether it's country legends, indie iconoclasts, crossover punks, or rhyme-slinging hip-hop crews, this venerable S.F. institution has got it. If you're bored between acts, scope the photo gallery that lines every hallway wall with pictures of the icons who've shared the same space in which you're currently standing. Decked out in bric-a-brac and reminiscent of a locals-only beach town dive, the Fishbowl is true to its community, sponsoring neighborhood dodgeball and softball teams (and boasting its winners' trophies on display), as well as supporting local artists by exhibiting their work for sale. On Sundays, the owner gets on the grill and serves up free BBQ. They also serve comfort grub everyday: the tater tots are "dusted with board spice" and the chicken tenders are battered thick. And what better way to wash down community-friendly food than to drink out of a community bowl? Their version of a Scorpion Bowl, the Fishbowl, is big enough for four - or one, you lush. There's a veritable produce section worth of fresh fruit (and mint) on the bar used for the cocktails here. There's a spread of cheeses and crackers each weeknight for patrons to help themselves. There's a fireplace in case the mojitos or greyhounds aren't warming enough. Maybe the word is classy. Maybe it's chill. Lion Pub works as a precursor to a rowdy night on the town, or as a nightcap if you live in the area and want to bathe in its red glow before last call. After all, this Pac Heights chestnut and its well-mannered patrons don't keep returning just for the brie. Read more about this San Francisco bar or club >>
http://www.rasselasjazzclub.com In a small, sunken, tented dining room alongside a funky jazz boîte, you'll find the most authentic and flavor-packed Ethiopian food this side of south Oakland, probably the sole Ethiopian eatery this side of the bay to merit attention. Perfect kitfo (fiery and complex "beef tartare"), fine doro wat (a dark-spiced chicken stew, the national dish), and an intriguing vegetarian combination, among others, are served atop a delicious sauce-soaking porous pancake (injera) that doubles as your eating implement and tastes way better than silverware. At night, the restaurant opens up its stage to local jazz, funk, and blues musicians, who play for anyone who wants to work off a few calories after dinner. http://www.yoshis.com This ain't the old Fillmore jazz scene - where once small, smoky joints like Bop City reigned among the mid-century locals-in-the-know. This Yoshi's venue is upscale to the max. The longtime Oakland jazz venue that brings national talent to the East Bay now brings more of the same to a central-city location. While the whole thing reeks a little of gentrification, at least the calendar is usually packed with top-flight players. Their food menu centers on Japanese items.
