http://www.the440.com It's a leather/bear/rough-trade kind of place for the older and manly kind of gay - one of the last standing relics of the Castro's bygone days. Its Thursday weekly "CDXL," however, has the too-cool kids tearing the place apart to mash-up and disco beats. Read more about this San Francisco bar or club >>
http://www.auntcharlieslounge.com Boys, girls - what's the diff? Guys become gals as part of Aunt Charlie's "Hot Boxxx Girls" lip-sync show every Friday and Saturday night. During the day, this place is a Tenderloin dive bar - albeit one more gay than the neighbors - while nighttime events attract both old drag queens and ghetto-fab young hipsters. http://www.cafeflore.com What was once the place to be seen in the 1970s Castro is now the most charming little cafe. With vaulted ceilings, lots of light, and a crowded patio, Cafe Flore packs them in day and night. And with its newly acquired entertainment and liquor licenses, it just keeps getting better with live DJs and harder booze. Read more about this San Francisco bar or club >>
http://www.cafesf.com This long-running gay dance hotspot recently reopened after major renovations. Old event faves like Boy Bar, ¡Pan Dulce!, and Delicious are back as well. Read more about this San Francisco bar or club >>
http://www.myspace.com/cinchbar The phrase "cool fucking dive bar" gets thrown around a lot these days, but this place is a cool fucking dive bar - especially in comparison to the trendy Russian Hill lounges up the street - while the unselfconsciously unhip gay crowd begs you to pinch its adorable, if somewhat aged, cheeks. http://www.divassf.com If you're a tranny - or just wanna hang out with some - this place is the epicenter of TV/TS activity along Polk Gulch. DJs and dance performances add distraction from the parade of gender-fucking regulars at, around, and sometimes on top of the bar. Read more about this San Francisco bar or club >>
http://www.edgesf.com Living life on the Edge, in this case, means paying a visit to this dark dive in the Castro. The tiny corner bar is close to the Castro Theatre, so it's great for a pre- or post-movie drink. Happy hour starts at noon and runs till 7 p.m., but the place is cash only, so make sure your wallet is full to take advantage of the specials: Sundays are all about $3 Bloody Marys to aid hangovers, Mai Tai Mondays offer up the strong and sweet concoctions for $4, and on Tuesday they sell PBR cans for $1. Planets hang from a cosmos-themed ceiling, the bartenders are friendly, and the music is random but enjoyable. A quiet, sparsely populated space early in the week, the Edge is packed from hump day on, especially on Fridays, when the self-explanatory "Strong Drinks, Low Lights, Men" sets off the weekend. Be warned: there is only one bathroom. Read more about this San Francisco bar or club >>
http://www.elriosf.com With moderately priced (and heavily poured) drinks, a sprawling patio, and an intimate stage in a side room, this Mission District destination is a keystone of indie-hipster nightlife. A wooden mockup of the Titanic's prow juts out of the front of this Tenderloin dive bar, where a faded rainbow flag lets you know gays are welcome (while the Bud Light neon in the window lets you know it ain't a fancypants kinda place). Read more about this San Francisco bar or club >>

http://www.hitopssf.com In any other city, a gay sports bar might seem like a contradiction in terms – but here in the heart of the Castro District, Hi Tops fits right alongside the gyms and fitness shops that cater to the buff local boys. A kitchen serving fancified versions of classic sports bar grub is also open until 10 p.m. if you want a grilled cheese to go with your ballgame. Read more about this San Francisco bar or club >>
http://www.holeinthewallsaloon.com This wildly friendly, eclectically decorated gay bar boasts DJs who spin just about everything, from classic rock to today's pop. http://martunis.ypguides.net This very gay piano bar features pianists ranging from the classically trained to the classically cornball. Its solid reputation as a place to get tipsy and belt out a little Sondheim keeps its walls packed. But don't think that just anyone can step up to the mike - the tone-deaf are weeded out posthaste. On Sunday evenings, local drag celebrities take over the spotlight at 7 p.m. Read more about this San Francisco bar or club >>

http://www.mobydicksf.com For lack of a more creative word, this place is fun. At this video bar, the VJs screen the homo favorites (Britney, Beyonce, etc.), but also throw in some rarities and lesser-known alternavideos, too, to the delight of patrons. Pinball machines and a pool table in the back also invite you to have a good time. Even when its seams are bursting on the weekends, Moby Dick's still manages to be the least annoying bar in the Castro that the locals (both young and old) seem to love. http://www.pilsnerinn.com At the busy corner of Church and Market in the Castro sits this casual neighborhood sports bar with simple wood tones, a pool table, pinball, and a garden patio. This is more of a straight-friendly gay bar, reminiscent of a small town bar that supports the community pool, softball, and bowling leagues. Trophies and plaques adorn the walls along with a strong, yet random, puffin theme (if you get the chance, you should query the bartender), as well as a few old-school touches such as a hanging surfboard and classic telephone booth. The urinal is a trough situation, and the women's room requires a key (the bar is boycentric). The patio can accommodate large groups with dark wood benches (with built-in ashtrays) lining the garden and a cornered-off porch for more intimate groups. The patio is well-lit with a transparent canopy, and it never gets smoky even when it's crowded on Friday night. The seating is well-designed so everyone has space, yet it all feels very intimate and social at the same time. A strong rosemary smell, babbling fountains, and Christmas lights help keep the mood calm, juxtaposing the lively but poised position inside, where the '80s hair metal streams from the jukebox.
