http://www.sacredgroundscafe.com/index.php This Haight local claims to be S.F.'s oldest coffeehouse, which provides a clue to its musical tastes. It has an assortment of weekly comedy and poetry nights, but the pass-the-hat musical performances are mostly acoustic troubadours, open mike jam sessions, and, well, coffeehouse music. More >>
http://www.sfblues.net/Saloon.html Revered for its daily live blues performances, the Saloon also has the rugged distinction of having survived the 1906 earthquake and standing as the oldest bar in San Francisco (opened in 1861). With its rough aged-wood interior and hardy clientele, the Saloon definitely stands apart from the shiny new neighbors along this nightlife-rich stretch of North Beach. More >>
http://www.sfcmc.org/site/?id=10 In addition to hosting all kinds of private music instruction, the center's 130-seat auditorium is a regular home to low-price (sometimes free) concerts and recitals. Performances from students, faculty, and visiting artists are a safe bet for quality and run the gamut from Copland to Coltrane. More >>
http://www.savannajazz.com Savanna stands out in its neighborhood: it's almost as if a North Beach jazz club dropped a spore on Mission Street. Intimate and comfortable, with accents of fake plastic plants, Savanna presents live jazz most nights of the week, along with dinner and drinks at a reasonable price. More >>
http://www.sfjazz.org Opened in January 2013, the new Hayes Valley home of SFJAZZ is an ambitious building that houses an auditorium, rehearsal spaces, a learning lab, cafe, and more. More >>
http://www.shebapianolounge.com Don't let the hokey exterior fool you, this place offers a comfortable, even classy setting in the heart of the Fillmore. Perhaps Meatless Mondays will draw you in, as all Ethiopian restaurants seem to have great vegetarian menus. This one costs more, but delivers the goods (they've even made the injera upscale), as does the cocktail list. Half the house cocktails are made with Ethiopian spiced bitters - and even the others are suitably named, such as the Abyssinian Storm (which is essentially a Dark and Stormy, but a really good one) - or you can order Tej, traditional honey wine. Note: This is not for the budget drinker. As for the piano lounge, expect a soloist early in the week, but midweek to weekend nights is when a trio completes the ambiance. More >>
http://www.simplepleasures.com This low-key Outer Richmond mainstay has been a favorite of poets and folkie songwriters since it opened in the '70s. While people can take in a book and a pint in the quiet back room, the stage out front hosts low-volume sets of acoustic rock, folk, and the occasional plugged-in pop band. More >>
http://www.slidesf.com Stroll past the crowds mobbed outside Ruby Skye and, hidden behind an unmarked door, you'll find Slide - so named for one optional method of getting down to the dancefloor area: back in the old Prohibition era, patrons visiting this address would ride a slide down to a hidden house of debauchery named Coffee Dan's. (Today's less adventurous souls can just take the stairs, if they so choose, and passively partake in the Coffee Dan's experience by watching Al Jolson's The Jazz Singer.) Lots of gleaming wood harks back to those speakeasy days when swells would sneak illicit drinks and dance a few Charlestons, but don't expect F. Scott and Zelda types swinging to Jazz Age classics. Slide is more Puff Daddy than Jay Gatsby, and the DJs' selections of Top 40, hip-hop, and house music reflect it. More >>
http://www.slimspresents.com Slim's is a midsize, brick-walled venue that hosts a variety of underground rock, metal, hip-hop, and reggae bands - and not only is it one of the few live music clubs in a neighborhood dominated by DJ discothèques, it's also one of the best places in the city for underage music fans to catch bands on the way up. There's a full bar for clubgoers over 21, plus a rear upstairs balcony with seating and tables if you want to take a load off and get away from the throngs below. More >>
http://www.space550.com Uses for this 15,000-square-foot venue, with its multiple levels of dance floors and lounges, vary widely, from gay-centric house music sweat-downs to underground hip-hop DJ contests and breakbeat/drum 'n' bass nights. More >>
