http://www.auntcharlieslounge.com Boys, girls - what's the diff? Guys become gals as part of Aunt Charlie's "Hot Boxxx Girls" lip-sync show every Friday and Saturday night. During the day, this place is a Tenderloin dive bar - albeit one more gay than the neighbors - while nighttime events attract both old drag queens and ghetto-fab young hipsters. More >>
http://www.apeconcerts.com/venue_bgc.cfm Imposing from the outside - but admittedly kind of meh (i.e., purely functional) on the inside - this rechristened old auditorium by City Hall is used for occasional concerts, conferences, banquets, trade shows, and political rallies. If you're stuck waiting in line, you can kill time by looking down at the sidewalk - that's where icons of San Francisco classic rock like Jerry Garcia are enshrined, Hollywood Walk of Fame-style, with memorial brass plaques. http://www.sfsymphony.org Built in 1980, this is the home of the San Francisco Symphony, and hosts preconcert discussions, international touring musicians, and youth orchestras in addition to regular symphony series. More >>
http://www.castlenews.com Although the fire marshal has put the kibosh on live bands (for now, at least), indie DJs still spin many nights at this dark, crowded, multi-tiered Scottish pub. If you're into hip retro Britpop or Mod soul - and love some fish 'n' chips with your stout - this is a good place to start your night. More >>
A new downtown cabaret under the aegis of singing star Michael Feinstein. More >>
http://www.slimspresents.com An exquisite mid-size room with grandiose antique ornamentation, a large stage, and an atmosphere of ornate historical luxury. Perched between the Tenderloin, Civic Center, and Polk Gulch neighborhoods, this hall first opened in 1907 and has been everything from a bordello to a jazz club to its current incarnation as one of the city's best places to see both old musical favorites and rising young stars. http://www.sfwmpac.org/herbst/ht_index.html Heavy red-velvet curtains, sparkling gold-leaf ceiling, vibrant Beaux Arts murals - if you want classy, you'll find it here at the Herbst. A San Francisco staple for classical, jazz, and world-music performances, this theatre inside the War Veterans Memorial Building (across the street from City Hall) has history and atmosphere aplenty. http://www.rickshawstop.com Though the Rickshaw's unmarked facade makes it a little difficult to find, you'll receive ample rewards for the search. Some of the country's most progressive DJs and indie bands play in the club's friendly confines, which features a great sound system, upstairs mezzanine for added visibility, and frequent all-ages shows for the kids. http://www.sfjazz.org Opened in January 2013, the new Hayes Valley home of SFJAZZ is an ambitious building that houses an auditorium, rehearsal spaces, a learning lab, cafe, and more. More >>
http://www.thewarfieldtheatre.com The grande dame of San Francisco's old vaudeville scene, the Warfield has seen it all — from '30s Borscht Belt comedians to '60s hippies and whatever the 21st Century decides to offer. This two-tiered, magnificently ornate old theater is a jewel set in the center of the city's downtown crown, replete with glassy old chandeliers, gorgeous carved woodwork, and a large stage framed by heavy velvet curtains. The lobby also features dozens of iconic photos and concert posters, offering evidence of the wealth of musicians who have performed here over the years. As for the concert space itself, the most exciting action happens in the former orchestra pit section — which is now a general admission dance floor — while the best viewing options usually reside up in the reserved balcony seats.
