Respectin' the Elders

Respectin' the Elders

The Young Widows drop some of the deepest, meatiest bass guitar sounds since the heyday of '90s post-punk, when lead-heavy noise rock bands ruled much of the scene (and ruined even more of the scene's hearing). This Louisville power trio combines menace and melody like a new re-imagining of the old-school sounds made by Shellac, Jawbox, the Jesus Lizard, or underrated fellow Louisvillians Crain: a style defined by guitars that shift between dissonant rust-toothed sawing and star-pointed chiming, drums that can make you dance even while driving iron nails through your feet, and (of course) that great walloping bass. With such obvious precursors in the recorded output of labels like Amphetamine Reptile, Touch & Go, Dischord, and more, is this a too-easy retro revival? Or a necessary correction to the wimpification of indie rock? Let your hearing — or perhaps the lack thereof — be your guide. — John Graham
