Furries Shine Strange Light Into the Darkness at Frolic Nightclub

Saturday night was a typically event-heavy night in San Francisco, and my tribe of friends was primarily split between going dancing at Gossip at The Cat Club or Love Triangle at The Blue Macaw. The wisest souls elected to stay home, because holy fucking shit it's cold outside.

My girlfriend Marta and I made our triumphant return to Frolic, the monthly furry nightclub at The Stud. We hadn't been since June, and we were joined by our fellow once-and-future Frolic regulars Ilene and Porter. Ilene was in her full-body bunny pajamas, Marta wore bunny ears of her own design, and I wore fuzzy purple cat ears, so the three of us each paid only $3 to get in.

Because Porter lacked animal accoutrement he had to pay $7, but regardless of the cost, no club in town offers greater spectacle for your entertainment dollar. (I should know, 'cuz I've been to a least a half dozen of 'em.)

Bathed in blacklight and filled with many colorful and glowy things, Frolic is a mix of people (mostly gay/boys) in full fursuits, as well as people of assorted genders in partial animal costumes, and plenty of noncostumed and (mostly) gay boys, a number of whom are there to dance and rub and nuzzle with the fursuits.

The word for furry sex is "yiff," and depending on who you ask, dancefloor bumping-and-grinding with a fursuit qualifies as yiffing. Others say that to yiff requires actual sex-sex, while still others have jokingly threatened to smack me if I say the word "yiff" again. Oh, what the hell -- I'm always up for an endorphin spike. Yiff!

I especially love the music in club organizer DJ Neonbunny's sets, many of which are recorded and available for download on Frolic's media page. I'm a longtime goth-clubber and will no doubt go spooky-dancing with Ilene in the near future, but I seldom enjoy or emotionally connect to the music at clubs like Gossip or Dark Shadows the way I do when Neonbunny is spinning. Frolic also has a much deeper well of new music to draw from.
