Lit Crawl is the ultimate proving ground for San Francisco writers and readers. It's the highlight and closing ceremony of Litquake's nine-day mega-celebration of words that fly off the page, a Mission pub crawl for bookworms en masse. Along with standard readings by hundreds of novelists, poets, and nonfiction writers of every genre imaginable, you'll also find literary performances the likes of which are hard to come by anywhere else.

Remember, slowpoke worms miss the juiciest fruit: To ensure success, you have to map out a plan, and stick to it. Scope out the online program of your favorite authors, indie presses, reading series, and themes. Watch the clock and distance between venues. Arrive and depart early. Diversify your experience. Chat up fellow lit fiends on the street. Pack a water bottle. Share your flask.

If, however, you can only make one gig, it should be Ben Loory at the Corium magazine showcase. Loory writes sweet, dark, contemporary fables that are exactly the right length for attention-challenged listeners or lit crawlers already overwhelmed by the sheer volume of words. He shares the stage with Jenny Bitner, John W. Evans, Stefanie Freele, and Andrea Kneeland.

Lit Crawl starts October 13 at 6 p.m. (and the Corium showcase starts at 7:15 p.m.) at Sub-Mission Art Space, 2183 Mission (at 18th St.), S.F. Admission is free.
