SFMOMA never ceases to impress. Great art exhibits, friendly staff, and an excellent coffee shop. If that's not enough to make you a fan, it even has free admission on the first Tuesday of every month -- all that, and it's right in the heart of downtown San Francisco. We know lots of our readers will be out and about in downtown shopping over the holidays, but when you get worn out from all that bargain hunting, stop by the SFMOMA cafe to grab a coffee and check out "The Lab."

"The Lab," is an exhibition of work from Maya Kabat in collaboration with Scott S. Jennings of Mosshouse and is sponsored by SFMOMA Artists Gallery. It explores architectural forms, geometric abstraction, and the tension between balance, color, and form, as part of Kabat's ongoing creative process. The pieces are installed in patterns and modular formations that show the interconnectivity of the individual works. If that sounds like fancy artist talk, don't worry. Maya Kabat has exhibited work in SFMOMA before, also at 5 Claude Lane Gallery, and she was a founding member of Mercury Twenty Gallery in Oakland. The pictures speak for themselves, and the exhibit will make the perfect antidote to the screaming babies and shoving shoppers that are the holiday season.

"The Lab" opens November 23rd at 10 a.m. (and runs through January 8, with the opening reception happening Dec. 6) at the SFMOMA Cafe, 151 Third St. (at Mission), S.F. Admission is free.

The San Francisco Street Food Festival was another success this year. Dozens of vendors with original, unheard-of creations, such as deep fried mac and cheese on a stick, black pea paste pancakes, and Korean quesadillas. Then there was the comfort foods we've grown accustomed to, like creme bruleé, shrimp rolls, and pound cake. Photographs by Mabel Jimenez.
