Laurie Rubin is an internationally celebrated mezzo-soprano who took her perfect pitch on the road at just 12 years old, but for many years, she couldn't get an opera director to cast her; they all feared a mid-performance tumble off the stage. Born blind, the singer-turned-author learned to ski and make jewelry, attended Yale, came out, and co-founded a performing arts school.

Though Rubin was greatly aided by the help of her family, her new memoir, Do You Dream in Color: Insights from a Girl Without Sight, explores the substantial biases she experienced, and the fears she overcame. As a teenager, she often found herself mid-conversation before realizing her friends had walked away, but at the same time, she rejected the pity so readily doled out to her.

Now a world traveler who has received stellar reviews from the New York Times and spoken with the likes of Diane Rehm on NPR, Rubin briefly stops in San Francisco. Take advantage of her West Coast visit and attend the Music at Meyer Concert Series, where Rubin performs alongside Bay Area singer Frederica von Stade. If you can't make the performance tonight, she also reads from her book on Jan. 15 at Modern Times.

Laurie Rubin performs Monday, Jan. 14 at 7:30 p.m. at Temple Emanu-El, 2 Lake (at Arguello), S.F. Admission is $22-$25.
