Marking a transition from what was formerly the San Francisco International Asian American Film Festival, this year the Center for Asian American Media introduces CAAMFest, an 11-day smorgasbord of music, food, digital media -- and film -- featuring the work of Asian and Asian-American artists from all over the world. Although the festival's artistic horizons have expanded to include other forms of expression, the primary focus is on film, with a number of high-profile screenings and premieres scheduled.

These include the San Francisco premiere of Linsanity, a documentary (directed by S.F. native Evan Jackson Leong) that relives the sudden rise of NBA star Jeremy Lin; Deepa Mehta's adaptation of the Salman Rushdie beloved novel, Midnight's Children; a spotlight celebration of Astro Boy, the first Japanese anime series imported to the US (in the mid-1960s); and "Memories to Light: Asian American Home Movies," the outgrowth of a CAAM initiative to rescue, restore, and archive decades of home movies from Asian-American households. In addition to these and many other screenings, CAAMFest includes live music, readings, comedy, food, and special programs that highlight women in media, present day China, and the 50th anniversary of the armistice that ended combat in Korea. The diverse and experimental nature of this year's festival and CAAM's terrific track record are the best possible advertisements for this unique 10-day event.

CAAMFest runs March 14-24 at multiple venues, S.F. Ticket prices vary. For more information and a full schedule, visit caamedia.org.

  • San Francisco Street Food Festival 2014
The San Francisco Street Food Festival was another success this year. Dozens of vendors with original, unheard-of creations, such as deep fried mac and cheese on a stick, black pea paste pancakes, and Korean quesadillas. Then there was the comfort foods we've grown accustomed to, like creme bruleé, shrimp rolls, and pound cake. Photographs by Mabel Jimenez.
