When you move to San Francisco and ask about the literary scene, Writers With Drinks is likely the first thing people tell you about. For one thing, most of us can get behind drinking as a social activity, especially when it's being done by the witty and verbose. But the real reason is host Charlie Jane Anders, who is a pioneer and master of free-form and fictitious biography.

Combining current events, gossip, flights of fancy, and an unparalleled knack for the literary, Anders introduces each of the evening's authors with an ad hoc story. Though always entertaining, this month's show is a literary feast: Mattilda Bernstein Sycamore ends her short Bay Area stint in support of The End of San Francisco, and will joined by Janis Cooke (whose novel Mary was named best historical fiction of 2006 by USA Today), Thaisa Frank (Heidegger's Glasses, Enchantment), Seth Harwood (Jack Wakes Up, Young Junius), and Veronica Belmont (The Sword and Laser book club).

Writers With Drinks starts at 7 p.m. on Saturday, May 11, at the Make-Out Room, 3225 22nd Street, S.F. $5-10; call (415) 647-2888 or visit
