Anyone who's taken the Golden Gate Ferry to Marin County knows how expensive a round-trip ticket is, especially when you throw in the extra $6 you spent on some mediocre chardonnay in a plastic cup.

That's why if you need a break from Karl the Fog, now's the time to take your bike and head up to Mount Tamalpais -- for the whole month of August the ferry will take you to Larkspur Landing, free of charge.

What's the catch? Well, the outdoor mall across the street from the ferry terminal, Marin Country Mart, is trying to increase its visitor numbers, but you don't have to go there. That's why we said take your bike. But if you are going to head over there, we're fans of Marin Brewing Co.'s Old Dipsea.

The free rides are offered with the ticket on the Golden Gate Transit site, and are good on any trips departing S.F. weekdays between 8:30 a.m.-3 p.m., and on weekends at the 12:40 p.m. departure. For a free trip home you need to pick up a ticket from any Marin Country Mart merchant, no purchase necessary, and is good on trips back from Larkspur on any weekday ferry leaving between 10:10 a.m.-8:50 p.m., and on the weekends at the 4:45 p.m. departure time.
