A strange thing happened this week -- some semblance of a plot that didn't entirely revolve around sex surfaced. Lauren, Cory's ex, announced last week that she was preggers and now we found out that Cory ain't the baby-daddy, it's some dude back home. He's pissed off.

"Bro," says Thomas to him, "you know what this calls for? A dose of mat-ur-it-yyy."

"So just be nice?" says Cory.

"Yeah," says Thomas. "Just be nice."

It's sad that this needs to be said, but this is a sad season. Later, on the post-show interview thing that MTV does with the cast, Lauren makes some vague allusion to the fact that the baby is no longer in her life. The comment just sort of hangs there, in the air, but to be fair, it's really none of our business.

Okay, so I lied, that plot was about sex, or at least what can happen when you have it. The second interesting thing that happened this week is also about sex, but by that I mean "gender" and queer politics. Arielle and her girlfriend Ashley get into a fight about how "masculine" Arielle likes to dress. Apparently Ashley would like her to be more girly. When I went to the press junket at the Real World house last year, I saw Arielle float by and I thought she was a dude -- a tall, lanky, stylish, really cool-looking dude. I brought her androgyny up to her and she was flattered; she said she liked to hear that. Yet on this week's show she expressed the fact that being mistaken for a boy a lot sucked, even though she prefers to dress like one. An internet rumor went around that she was trans and this "scared" her. By the time I met her, she had reconciled this part of herself and embraced it.

Later on Arielle invites over a bunch of her gay and trans friends and we meet Kingston, a female-to-male trans man, and the whole house is really cool about it. I wish to hell they had cast a trans person for the entire show, but then again it wasn't part of the hetero-fuck fest story arc that the producers envisioned. Still, it was a nice vignette and a nod to the once-great show's groundbreaking depictions of gay people on TV.

And now, back to our regularly scheduled banging.
