According to a list put out by Estately, San Francisco is the least "country" U.S. city. Estately must not be familiar with Twang Honky Tonk.

Although S.F. definitely has a shortage of cowboy hats and large belt buckles -- except when Hardly Strictly Bluegrass rolls around once a year -- there are apparently enough country music fans in the general vicinity to keep a country event alive: Twang Honky Tonk, a weekly country music and dancing extravaganza, has been happening at McTeague's Saloon (1237 Polk) for the past few years and shows no sign of stopping.

Featuring line dancing lessons, every country song that has been popular since the early '90s, and a DJ named Honky Tonk Henry, Twang has a large and loyal group of attendees who show up every week to get their country on.

"Twang Honky Tonk is not a San Francisco 'take' on Southern country bars and honky tonks," said Twang founder Paul Hayward in an email to SF Weekly. "It is a honky tonk."

So, if you've got a hankering for a $2 Lone Star or you feel like country dancing, swing on down to McTeague's on Thursday nights. Yee-haw.
