Pull My Finger: San Francisco Ranks Ninth Funniest City in America

Posted By on Fri, Apr 25, 2014 at 8:00 AM

It's official. San Francisco's sense of humor has gone from tacky to techie.

All of sudden "pull my finger" jokes aren't funny enough, unless there's a whiff of Google somewhere in the payoff. In that case, put your index finger down and bring the other nine up because the folks at Humor Code rank San Francisco as the ninth funniest city in America.

A niner is no laughing matter. Just ask the Castro. Ba-dum-chhh!

Oh shoot! We're supposed to think sophisticated funny now, not sophomoric. It's just so hard to think straight sometimes.

Well here's where the geeks come in. According to the study, San Francisco's current comedic state represents the tension that now exists between the city's liberal-minded forebearers and the tech-savvy elite of the new guard. The result is an overall appreciation for intellectual humor tinged in classic San Francisco sass.

Think of it as the highbrow meets the lowbrow in order to make the unibrow of comedy. That's San Francisco. Cue the laugh meter. We're here all night.

The criteria for the study is as follows:

  • Frequency of visits to Cheezburger comedy websites, such as Lolcats and FAIL Blog
  • Number of comedy clubs per square mile in each city
  • Traveling comedians' ratings of each city's comedy-club audiences
  • Number of famous comedians born in each city, divided by city population
  • Number of famous funny tweeters living in each city, divided by city population
  • Number of comedy radio stations available in each city
  • Frequency of humor-related web searches originating in each city

In other news, it was the coyote who crossed the road -- not the chicken. Now that's funny.

The San Francisco Street Food Festival was another success this year. Dozens of vendors with original, unheard-of creations, such as deep fried mac and cheese on a stick, black pea paste pancakes, and Korean quesadillas. Then there was the comfort foods we've grown accustomed to, like creme bruleé, shrimp rolls, and pound cake. Photographs by Mabel Jimenez.
