San Francisco Roller Skaters Plan to Break World Record

Posted By on Wed, May 21, 2014 at 1:24 PM

Oh it's on!

After a group in Glasgow, Scotland broke the record for the longest chain of skaters -- an impressive 254 people on four wheels skating in a line with their hands on the hips of the person in front them -- San Francisco is determined to take back the title. And you can be a part of it.

The Godfather of Skating and founder of the Church of 8 Wheels, David Miles Jr., says that the chain will have to move 400 meters without breaking to claim victory. And that's not the only Guinness World Record that members of the California Outdoor Rollersports Association, the Church of 8 Wheels, the Black Rock Roller Disco (a Burning Man theme camp), and the public will attempt. They'll also try to set a record for the longest serpentine, which Miles describes as skaters holding hands with one another and moving back and forth, much like how a snake moves (or a dragon in the Chinese New Years' Parade).

If you don't have skates, don't worry, you can rent some at the event, which will be happening at 11 a.m. on June 8 at Sunday Streets on the Great Highway. The registration fee is $10 at opens at 9 a.m., skate rentals are $5, and all the money goes towards refurbishing the Black Rock Roller Disco (a skate rink at Burning Man that's going into its 14th year!).

After San Francisco claims victory (or makes a very valid effort), everyone is invited to the Skatin' Place (Sixth Avenue at Kennedy Drive, in Golden Gate Park), for a skaters' showcase at 2 p.m.
