Poop Art: All Things Feces Take Over Gallery Space

Posted By on Wed, Aug 6, 2014 at 8:34 AM

Tighten your sphincters, we’re in for a wild gallery visit.

“Internationally uncelebrated artists” Guillermo Sanchez and Rafael Saenz exhibit “Poop is Art & Vice Versa” opens tonight. And the temptation to drop a deuce, so to speak, and publish this article with just the gallery title is great. But we prevail through fecal thickets of information to find that Sanchez and Saenz can also hook you up with fresh animal dung — sent directly to your door, like a rustic pizza delivery (if Dominoes had a pre-digested-by-cow option).
Sanchez and Saenz’s artistic endeavors largely involve improving extant art with fecally thematic additions. No artist or cultural icon — from Roy Lichtenstein to Louis Vuitton — are so great that they are immune to improvement through the careful application of real, locally harvested animal refuse. This second annual poop paean will display posters, paintings, photographs, and a special installation. The pair say that their “iconoclastic mission is to challenge squeamishness and to advocate the power of poop as a means of expression.”

Excrement hasn’t had a wittier and more fearless champion since whoever wrote the seminal classic Everyone Poops. Sanchez and Saenz are founders of Ipoopyou.com, a revolutionary use of the internet that allows people to send one another containers of animal poop in the mail. Online customers can choose between cow, horse, pig, chicken, and goat (the latter is a pile of elegant, caviar-like morsels), as well as the limited edition “Chef’s Choice,” which this month is called “Foie-Crap.” The professional poop delivery service urges, “There are hundreds of reasons and thousands of people who deserve shit mailed to their door. Don’’t get your hands messy, our specialists will do the dirty work for you!“ As well as offering options of total anonymity and special gift wrapping, the animal poop is all farm-raised and eco-friendly. The 'legal' section of the ipoopyou website is roughly the length of a large-print edition of Moby Dick.

While Sanchez and Saenz’s work is unlikely to be preserved in the anals annals of art history and more likely to decompose into a swirling mist of stool, their project is a unique response to the eternal question, “What is art?” The pair say, “this work reminds us that no matter how exalted we may perceive a person to be, in the end, we are all the same shit.”

Part satire and part honest celebration of the absurd, Sanchez and Saenz’s show is sure to take that world famous waste product expelled through a digestive tract to new heights. Wipe away your preconceptions, flush away fear, and prepare to go number two.

Poop is Art and Vice Versa opens tonight at 6 p.m. at the ATA (Artists’ Television Access), 992 Valencia. Admission is free.
