Mystery Girls Passing The Torch

Oh, things are getting deep in Mystery Girls land. It’s a play within a play within a play.

This show is based on the premise that two women who used to star in a ‘90s cop show called Mystery Girls are now actual detectives. The ABC Family show, of course, stars two actresses who used to star in the ‘90s not-so-mysterious show Beverly Hills 90210, and they make lots of allusions to that illustrious past in the dialogue.

So, this week the plot was that Mystery Girls was being resurrected with new, younger actresses (just like the remaking of 90210!) and Spelling and Garth— Holly and Charlie— are asked to do a cameo. The fourth wall hasn’t exactly come crashing down so don’t get too excited. If this was really post-modern, Tori and Jennie would turn toward the camera as themselves and make witty asides about their real lives.

“Dean never looks at me like that anymore!” Tori would squeal.

“And to think I divorced Peter and ended up with this guy?” Jennie would bemoan.

The producers (which are, coincidentally, Garth and Spelling) managed to find even worse actresses than themselves to play their younger competition. Well, worse than Tori at least. Garth is a good comedic actress, as I have said. Tori is just comedic.

Anywho, throw in the myriad dick and balls jokes that this episode had and you’ve got yourself a pretty basic example of this show’s formula: leach off of thirty year old sitcom structures and gags and hope the celebrities will carry it. Mystery solved!
