Oh chile, this show is getting so dark, which might be its saving grace. If it gets black enough — closer to the center ring in Dante’s Inferno — it just might continue to hold my attention. Until now, I and many people who have been writing about this show all seem to have the same consensus: This convoluted, high-concept series needs to fucking go somewhere. We need an A+B+C plot. The gray edges of this concept are blurring the entire run.

But back to the darkness.

This week we learned that Gladys was stoned to death by members of her own cult. Not sure why I didn’t see that coming. Kevin magically wakes up in a cabin in the woods with Patty, the cult’s maven, and the redneck guy that is his partner in crime during his evening rendezvous with mayhem (dog killing and now apparently woman-snatching). We as the viewer can’t really tell if it’s really happening either; is Kevin dreaming or did he and Klondike Pete really brutalize Patty?

The mountain man puts a bag over her head to suffocate her whilst Kevin romps through the woods and finds bloody clothing for some reason. He tears it off trees with many a loud “Nooo!” and we have no idea why. Then he returns to the cabin and saves Patty, only to have her slit her own throat. Oh, before that they go back-and-forth about understanding or not understanding one another. Got it… I don’t understand. Does anyone fucking understand?

There was one ho-boy moment in this episode though: Jill, Kevin’s daughter, shows up at the cult compound and asks if she can stay. Will her mom allow her daughter to smoke and surrender to life’s futility? Or will she see the futility in believing that life is meaningless?

We shall see.
