It’s been two months since Kodachrome’s story of a dying person going on one last road trip to do one last thing while also reconciling with their adult child, so it’s high time for Shana Feste’s comedy Boundaries, about a dying person going on one last road trip to do one last thing while also reconciling with their adult child. This time, the adult child is female, so that offers a bit of variety until the next indie film about a dying person going on one last road trip to do one last thing while also reconciling with their adult child inevitably arrives in a few months — probably with an equally vague, one-word title like Family.

Laura (Vera Farmiga) is a single mother with a propensity for picking up strays who reluctantly agrees to drive her estranged father Jack (Christopher Plummer) to live with her sister JoJo (Kristen Schaal), unaware that Jack plans to sell off his weed stash with the help of Laura’s sensitive son Henry (Lewis MacDougall). Boundaries makes a few tweaks to the formula, some of which are welcome and others which are baffling — pedophilia jokes, yay? — but overall it’s pleasant enough, and Christopher Lloyd even shows up. Warning: We see Lloyd’s bare ass, which may violate your personal boundaries.

Rated R.
Opens Friday at the Embarcadero Center Cinema.
